Linda Kilangany Yarrowin

DOB: 1972
Born: Delissaville, NT
LANGUAGE GROUP: Emmiyangal
COMMUNITY: Belyuen, NT

Linda's Aboriginal name is 'Killungung'. She was born in Delissaville on the other side of the waterhole before it became known as Belyuen community. It is located in the Cox Peninsula in Kenbi Land, and about 150 kilometers south west of Darwin in the Northern Territory.

Linda's parents, Ruby Yarrowin and Roy Yarrowin, were both from the Emmiyangal Language group from a place called Marbulhuk (Cape Ford). Linda's parents were strong leaders both culturally and in 'western way'. Linda's partner is from Bulgul community, and they have 3 grandchildren. In the Dry Season, Linda and her partner travel to his family's Country in Bulgul.

Linda has been involved in an Indigenous based film group called Karrabing Collective for the last ten years which has taken her to many places around the world for film screenings and art projects. It is now well-known internationally, having shown widely at film festivals and exhibitions as far as Oslo, London, Berlin and New York. The films represent their lives, create bonds with their land, and intervene in global images of Indigeneity.

Linda is also a self-taught artist and in 2022 she joined the artistic group known as the Bulgul Artists. It is an informal collective of family and friends from the Bulgul Community and surrounding regions in the Top End. The talented group now includes 15 artists and spans three generations.

Linda's art is inspired by her mother and father. She likes to paint stories she heard as a child about growing up in Marbhuluk and how they travelled from place to place by canoe and by foot. Bright jewel-like colours punctuate her art just as they are found in the natural landscape around her homeland. She uses a variety of techniques in her art, sometimes employing fine dot, brush, and cross hatching all on the one canvas to produce extraordinary and mesmerising effects. We look forward to Linda developing her strong talent.
